SPEEDY

Last August our dog had a litter of four puppies that were as cute as they could be (puppies usually are) but from the time that they were old enough to get out from under the shed where they were born, they didn’t want to have anything to do with us.  They apparently took after their mother because she is the same way.  Well, we managed to find homes for three of them but there was no way that anybody was going to want the last one as she was the most nervous (scaredycat) of the bunch.  So we decided to hang on to her.  We will walk out the back door and she will take off running (we call her Speedy), not even waiting to see which direction we are heading. We can stand absolutely still and she will run back and forth across the yard, whimpering as she goes. We have tried everything we can think of to show that we don’t mean any harm to her but nothing seems to work.  She will watch as the other two dogs come get special treats and other hand outs but she will hang back and not join them.  She will only come to eat when we close the door to go back in.

As I was watching her the other day running around, it made me think about how much like Speedy we are sometimes.  God tries to draw us closer to Him but we run off, afraid of what His intentions might be.  We’re afraid that He will call on us to do something that we don’t feel capable of doing or to make changes in our lives that maybe we know we need to change but haven’t figured out how yet.  We’re afraid of what He might want us to give up never realizing that He can give us so much more. Just as we want Speedy to learn to trust us and to know that we love her, that we only want the best for her, God wants the same for us.  He wants us to learn to place our faith in Him, to know that no matter what He calls us to do He will help us to accomplish it.  He has already shown us how much He loves us by sending His only Son to die on the cross for us, to take our sins as His and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness.

Just like Speedy, if we don’t learn to stop running and draw closer we will never realize what special treats and hand outs (blessings) we might be missing out on.
